Issue on Platinum //e international

Postby roughana » Sat Apr 26, 2014 3:46 pm

Hi,
My CFFA3000 is not working in my Platinum //e international system.
When it is installed the Lores screen gets turned on and the machine hangs just after Apple IIe is printed to the text screen.
Multiple resets can get a cursor but PR#<cffa slot> just does similar stuff again.
I have some unusual additions to my machine.
I have a 65816 CPU (it worked so I used it as a 65802 for Merlin 16).
I have a Meg80z card in the Aux slot, however removing that (empty aux slot) and replacing with IIeasy RAM (64k 80col?) also made no difference.
The meg80z has an issue at 60hz so I have also replaced the MMU with a 50hz variant. Power here is 240v 60hz.
Perhaps this is the cause of the problem?
Unfortunately I am not sure where my old chips are to be able to swap them back in again.
Regards,
Andrew

Further info on my CFFA setup.
I am using the original firmware as shipped and all dips are up (not a GS).
I have no CF installed.
I have a USB thumb drive plugged directly into the card.
I tried it in slots 7 and 2.

Sorry, I am confused about the power.
Power here is 240v 50hz. I have the 60hz version of a chip installed.

Here is a short video of the power on sequence http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lm1vQmCAkMs

The same CFFA3000 works fine in my ROM3 IIgs.

It's possible the 65816-in-//e is part of the problem. I know we had bus-timing differences between the IIgs and the //e, and the CFFA3000 hardware pays attention to the GS DIP Switch. You *might* get better results using the "Apple III" DIP switch settings, which make the CPLD expect GS bus timing without making the firmware think you're on a IIgs. -- If that doesn't help, I suggest swapping in a real 65C02 (available from Jameco.com for $6.95, for example).

What happens, after multiple resets to get a ']' prompt, if you try entering the CFFA3000 menus with CALL-151 and then C730G ?

Hi Dave!

Trying C730G makes the screen go to lores and it goes nuts with beeps & clicks, while the lores screen changes patterns.

Instead of regressing to a 65c02 I'm looking at installing a Transwarp with 65816 in the socket. This is a supported combination for the Transwarp board. I will report back when I have something else to use as the CPU.

Andrew

I have now received a TransWarp with 65c02.
Using the 65c02 in the CPU socket (no TransWarp installed), the CFFA worked fine.
Using the TransWarp with 65816 (4Mhz) installed - with the CFFA slot set to closed or open, at 1Mhz or at 3.7Mhz - the CFFA did not work.
I will ask on csa2 for anyone else using a similar combination to report on their ability.

Andrew

Ok, good news.
I have upgraded my CFFA3000 to firmware 3.1 with CPLD 6.
When CFFA3000 has DIP 4 and DIP 7 set, the //e boots with the 65816 enabled Transwarp installed.

Thanks for the suggestion Dave Lyons.

It seems that the DIP settings are not accurately named.
DIP 4 for Apple /// - Perhaps 'Use 6502 Firmware' would be better?
DIP 7 for Apple IIgs - Perhaps '65816 processor' would be better?

Andrew
