I want to use the Apple IIgs hard drive images available on the "What is the Apple IIgs?" site, the images are in .hdv format (on my apple IIgs with the cffa3000 rev c card)

I have already used the helpful thread on this site "Howto: Creating a fully virtual GSOS system - from scratch" to create a boot.po image (and installed the gs/os).

I found this page that outlines loading these .hdv images onto a CF card but I'm unclear/inexperienced with the procedure shown:

http://www.65816.com/what_is_the_iigs_disk_image.html

I tried simply using the unix command "cat" as shown in the link above as follows

>cat (what is the apple IIgs? disk image).hdv > boot.po

That didn't work. Thanks for any help!

Sorry for such a late reply... but in order to use one of the "what is" images, all you have to do is copy the .HDV file to your CF or USB stick, and then in the CFFA3000 configuration screen insert that .HDV as one of the SmartPort devices. Depending on how you boot now, that drive image will show up as an additional drive on your GSOS desktop.
