CFFA Installation on Apple IIgs, CFFA activity light

Postby EricB » Thu Aug 17, 2006 1:04 am

I installed a CFFA card on an Apple IIgs a ciuple weeks ago. My card has the activity LED on the end of a cable. I replaced the original green LED with a bright and clear red LED. I then mounted the LED with double-sided foam tape next to the green power LED located on motherboard at the front of the case. The sides of the LED socket was trimmed down a bit so that it would fit under the front of the case and so that it could be mounted flush with the motherboard. Removing the front plastic cover that houses the power indicator made this eaiser. Now when there is activity on the CFFA card the power indicator changes from green to orange/red.

Can we see a picture?

That sounds really cool. Can you post a picture of the changes you made? (It would be tricky to get a picture of it actually going red unless you were doing a big transfer or something. :-) )

Picture of Installed Card and Cable

Postby gsmcporet » Fri Oct 06, 2006 5:50 pm

Eric,

I ithink that David has the right idea. A picture showing the installed card with the cable leading to the front of the housing. Maybe a couple of pics of the modifications you made to the card to add the cable.

Great Idea!

Regards,
Steven

I finally got around to taking some pics of the LED as I have it installed. Looks like I cannot post images here directly, so here is a link.

Fantastic! I knew there was a reason I had Rich put my LED on a leash...

I've heard rumor that a new generation of CFFA cards is under development.

I believe the old "inCider" magazine had an article on a cool Disk ][ Mod.
It used a bi-color LED that was wired to light up 'green' when reading from a disk,
and it would light up 'red' when writing to a disk. The LED was Red when forward-biases,
and Green when reverse-biased, if I recall correctly.

If the reading and writing were roughly in balance, the LED would glow Yellow due to
the alternating Red and Green colors.

I think this would be much more impressive on a computer's front-panel LED display, but
that's a project for another day.
