Loading GS/OS 6.0.1

Postby AppleIIgs » Thu Aug 09, 2012 8:22 pm

I'm new at using an apple computer. I bought the CFFA3000 after getting a SCSI card and HD. I found that the HD is bad. I would like to use my 256MB CF card as a HD and load GS/OS 6.0.1 from floppy to it. I looked at the manual and did not see how you would setup the CCFA to do that. I did see on page 12 some information on formatting the CF card in the advanced section of the menu. Not knowing for sure what to and not having a MAC to reformat the card if I made a mistake, I would like to know if I can get some help on how to do this?

Thanks,

The CFFA3000 will work great as a hard drive for GSOS. The thing you want to do is somehow create a blank 32MB file for the CFFA3000 to use as your hard disk. Then, you can use your GSOS install floppies (real or emulated) to format and install GSOS on the blank hard drive image.

Or, you could just use an already-installed GSOS image like this one:
ftp://ftp.apple.asimov.net/pub/apple_II ... m6.hdv.zip

Unzip that, and the resulting SYSTEM6.2MG could be used directly by the CFFA3000 as a SmartPort disk.

Thanks for the help David, I was looking online and reading about getting the image file to boot from. I'll give that a try.

If you would like to go through the entire install experience, you could use the CFFA3000 to create a new, blank 32MB image (see the main menu item, "New Blank Disk Image"). The tricky thing is that you'd have to boot some other kind of ProDOS utility disk to format the now blank image.

If you do that, though, you can mount all the install disks at once, as well as the new image as SmartPort devices. Booting the first floppy disk, the installer should find the newly formatted image. You can then choose it as the destination and install away.

I do have a disk to format the HD that is bad. I should be able to use it. I'll give them both a try. Thank you David.
