How to create and install OS6.01 on a Apple IIGS

Postby robbo007 » Thu Feb 20, 2014 9:59 am

Hi all,
I'm having problems using the previously created image files of GOS 6.01. I assign the downloaded image as a smartport and the CFFA300 boots it but the progress bar freezes at the end. There is a beep too. I've tried various image files and tested my hardware with various hardware diagnostics and all ok.

My last change is to do a fresh install from diskettes.

Whats the best way to create the actual diskettes to boot form and then install on my Compact flash smartport?

Whats the best slot for this so I have really floppy drive access and smartport access at the same time¿

Thanks,
Rob

Your GS is crashing. That's the beep. Has it successfully run GSOS before?

(I realize I haven't answered your actual question - we'll get to that here - but creating disks isn't likely to solve the problem, either.)

ahhh... I've tested using the diagnostics programs but can't seem to find a faulty piece of hardware. Could it be a conflict with the CFAA3000?
I've never run GOS 6.01 before. First time..

No. It's either the images or the GS. The CFFA3000 runs GSOS quite happily. How much memory does your machine have? Which ROM version?

Exactly... right now we have to suspect the machine.

Ok, that meets the minimum specs. Do you happen to have any RAM disks defined, do you? That would chew up more memory than you have + what the installer needs.

Hi,
I've just checked and all RAM is free. Nothing defined as RAM disk.

Its strange as when its loading the status bar I get a little random pixel corruption and then when it gets to the status bar reaches the end it start beeping. Is there a way to see the error codes? That way I could at least try and troubleshoot the problem.

Cheers,
Rob

Random pixel corruption? That's especially bad. You can bet the beep is you crashing to the monitor prompt, probably with a meaningless dump of processor status as the machine walked off the edge of memory. You could do a Ctrl-C to get to the BASIC prompt, then TEXT to get back to a 40-column screen. But again, it crashed in a way that suggests hardware or software failure, so diagnosing from the dump probably won't lead you anywhere gainful.

Can you use ADTPro? You could reconstitute the disk images on real floppies and see if it behaves the same way. You also might try various other bootable GS hard drive images that are on http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/, for example.

Yep,

Tried both approaches already. I've used a already made HD image file from: http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/ and I've downloaded from Asimov the original floppies images and created the install with ADT-PRO. Same strange random pixel corruption then the beep. :(

Ok, it's the computer then. The random pixels are a dead giveaway. The diagnostics have failed you...

Now the hard part.... to find out what is failing :D As all diagnostics tests seem to pass... LOL... I'll try changing the removable chips tonight as I have my old logic board and see if I'm lucky..

First, be sure to remove everything you can. Remove even the CFFA3000 and try booting from floppy with no other cards and see if that works any differently.

Right... I get this error now...

GS/OS System Error
Address = $006B16 LC bank = $0
Error Code = $534B

Does this refer to the RAM banks?

I am no expert, but his appears to be an error in the Language Card memory bank which is in the 128K of slow ram on the motherboard. There could be a hardware problem with the memory, or a problem with the disk image being corrupted. If you have booted the computer successfully from a floppy, I am betting on a bad disk image.

hmmm... Its strange.. Last night I booted up the game Necromancer and it seemed to load but then 2 minutes into the game play I noticed the same random pixel corruption and then it froze. I'm chatting with the guy who sold me the logic board on ebay to see if he can replace it. Looks promising.
