Is there a setup guide for CFFA3000 in Apple ///

Postby bbeardmore » Sun Nov 29, 2015 11:52 am

Is there a setup guide or instructions for CFFA3000 in Apple ///?

So far I have pieced together:
- format USB drive as MBR and FAT32
- connect USB drive to CFFA card
- set CFFA card dips switches for Apple /// (switches 4 & 7 only on)
- install CFFA into Apple /// slot 1
- transfers Apple /// CFFA drivers to Apple /// System Utilities 5.25 floppy disk
(HOW DOES ONE GET THE CFFA driver onto the floppy????)
- boot Apple /// with System Utilities
- select "SCP"
- read active .D1/SOS.DRIVER from floppy
- read .D1/CFFA3000.DRIVER from floppy
- edit .CFFA3000 device slot to be slot 1
- generate new system and save it to .D1/SOS.DRIVER on floppy
- reboot
- select device handling
- format .CFFA device
** begin using the CFFA volume

How or can I select and boot off CFFA?

I just found the following

----------------------------------------
This disk will boot in an Apple /// with a Rich Dreher CFFA card in slot 1. You can rebuild a system disk and change the driver parameters to select a different slot, but it's probably easiest to just move the CFFA to slot 1.

This utility program will partition and format a compact flash card or IDE drive atteched to a CFFA card. Diagnostic utilities are also included.
from [ http://apple3.org/Software/system/drivers/cffautil.txt ]
------------------------------------------

Now how do I get the CFFA util disk image onto a floppy? [ http://apple3.org/Software/system/drivers/cffautil.dsk ]

Hi, bbeardmore -

First and foremost, you can't boot an Apple /// from anything but a floppy on the first physical floppy controller port. There is simply no way with stock Apple /// ROM to do anything but that.

Now, the remaining question I think you have - how to reconstitute a floppy disk image on to a real floppy disk so you can boot it? That's accomplished with ADTPro: http://adtpro.com/

If you don't already have an Apple II to do disk reconstitution with, the /// does that just fine, but it's a little bit of work to get yourself bootstrapped:
http://adtpro.com/bootstrap3.html

Edit: you don't want to use the cffautil disk from a v1/v2 CFFA card (which is what you linked to). You just want the CFFA3000 driver diskette which is part of the CD you received with your card, and is also part of the latest download on the site here:
https://dreher.net/projects/CFforAppleII ... CDv1.4.zip
The disk image is called CFFA3000Apple3Driver100.dsk in that zip file.
